JAYA INTERNATIONAL DESIGN

Born in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, as the son of a Sumatran diplomat and Yogyanese princess, Jaya’s childhood was spent travelling with his parents, as well as residing in the house of his maternal grandmother where he absorbed the Javanese culture. As a young man, Jaya attended university in England where a series of pivotal events connected him to the profession he has joyously made his own. Early in the 1990’s, Jaya returned to Indonesia where he established a design studio that flourished from the beginning.

Referred as one of the world’s top 100 interior designers with award-winning projects across the globe, Jaya holds the guiding vision of his work very closely to his heart – to find the beauty and serenity in each project rather than a definitive expression of a period or style. He always puts the cultural and ecological context in the forefront where he draws heavily on the vital elements of the local culture as his source of inspiration before skilfully integrating them into the environment he designs.

In 2005, Jaya’s professional path crossed that of businessman Bruce Goldstein with whom he founded Jaya International Design. At JID, it is Jaya who directs all design activities. It is his eye, his vision and rigorous dedication to the work that has attracted prestigious clients and projects that stretch from Singapore to China, Europe and the U.S, as for example the hotel The Chedi Milan implemented in cooperation with Interna in 2007. Maintaining a personal involvement with every client’s interests, Jaya takes on those projects that offer the freedom to carry a concept through from space planning and design to furniture, artwork and the smallest details of decor.

With such meticulous attention to details, the Jaya designed environment, including The Patina in Singapore, part of an iconic mixed-use development; The Nam Hai in Hoi An, Vietnam; and the Amanfayun in Hangzhou, China, that is completed with unvarnished elm, rice-paper lanterns and lattice screens, are best experienced first-hand for its sophistication, luxury and grace.
